When the founders needed an image for what they were attempting, Franklin reached for Moses at the sea and Pharaoh’s army going under, with the motto Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God.
It was never adopted. What makes it worth wearing is that it was proposed at all. Asked to explain a revolution, an American founder reached instinctively for the Hebrew Bible, because the Exodus already contained the argument: that there is an authority above the throne, and that walking away from tyranny can be an act of obedience rather than rebellion.
The Exodus also supplies the part people skip. Liberation is followed immediately by law. Getting out was never the whole story.
