Most people have stood in front of the Liberty Bell. Far fewer have read what is written on it.
The line cast into that bell comes from Leviticus, and it was chosen deliberately. It was written about the Jubilee year, when debts were released and people returned to their land. Liberty in the Torah is not the absence of rules. It is the moment a person is handed back their own life and asked what they will now do with it.
Which makes this the older and more demanding version of the idea. Not a slogan about freedom, but a claim on the person who has been set free.
